What to Expect

  • We will meet, either in person or on Zoom, to discuss your birth plans and our services. Your birth photography is reserved when your contract and retainer are received. Your final balance is due by your 37th week. Payment plans are available.

  • We will keep in touch throughout your pregnancy and ask that you keep us updated, especially when you are going into labor — we want to hear from you! One of us will join you when you are in active labor and stay until a few hours postpartum.

We will photograph your birth story and offer doula support if you selected that option.

  • We will hand-edit your photos and deliver your gallery 4-6 weeks after the birth, and will also provide a slideshow of highlight images set to music with your gallery. We are happy to send a few “sneak peeks” of a couple of favorite images within 24 hours.

FAQ

Birth Photography is nothing like your typical family session. It involves having your photographer essentially become a part of your birth team — so of course it’s a big decision. You are sure to have lots of questions. Here are a few we hear most often, but please get in touch if you would like to chat about anything: hello@venturabirthphotography.com

Better yet, we love to meet with potential clients before booking so we can be sure we have adequately addressed all your questions and you feel like we are a good fit. Let’s schedule a consultation — either in person, on the phone, or over Zoom. Looking forward to meeting you!

Questions about Birth Photography

frequently asked
  • Moments involving the birth of your child are CORE MEMORIES — and you will be suprised to find how little you remember! A birth photographer can capture so much of your experience and you will then have those memories to view and share with your family. And it will free up your support team so they don’t have to worry about taking photos.

  • At 38 weeks, we will go on call for you 24/7 until your baby is born. This means one of us (or possibly our back-up photographer) will be available to photograph your birth — we just need you to contact us when you go into labor. Typically your partner, main support person, or family member attending to you during your birth will be the designated person to contact us. If you are working with a doula or midwife, they can also be the person responsible for the updates and communication.

  • We are much like a fly on the wall during your birth. We will do our best to stay out of the way while observing and documenting your story. As for the interactions, we will chat if you want to chat, encourage when needed, but for the most part, we will keep quiet in the corner of the room or in the background.

Our equipment is advanced to capture images in very low light conditions, however, when we do use flash, we use a diffuser to cover our flash light beam and other tools and tricks to ensure the light is not harsh or hitting you directly. Using flash does support sharp, clear images, however, it will not make or break your birth story. It will only mean your images will have some grain and slight loss of detail.

  • We understand that every mother's personal preferences for their birth story are different. Some mothers want EVERY detail during the delivery and others only want everything that is not graphic or personal. No matter your preference, we will document your birth story at your comfort level. There are different angles and areas that we can capture to still document the special day. We will discuss this at your consultation to ensure you are getting as much (or as little) of your story as you want.

  • Sometimes, birth happens very quickly or very early and we can't control that. It is very important that you communicate with us as soon as possible so that we can be ready and arrive on time to your birth location. Should we miss the birth, we will arrive as soon as we possibly can and begin documenting upon arrival and stay a bit longer than usual. Depending on how much is missed, we may adjust your birth package to include a newborn session at your home.

  • Coverage of a C-Section depends greatly on the hospital and situation. If we know ahead of time, we will work with your OB and hospital to get permission to attend. In the event of an emergency c-section, no one is permitted in the OR, sometimes including your partner. In these situations, we will continue documenting the story after delivery.

  • In the event of an emergency, we will use our best judgement and may or may not continue to document depending on the exact situation. If you or your baby needs help, we immediately step out of the way to let your medical team do their jobs and take care of both of you. Your health and the health of your child are the most important focus of the day. We will begin shooting again when all situations are handled. If you are delivering at home or at a birth center and need a transfer to the hospital, we will follow you and meet there to continue shooting when able (depending on current COVID permissions).

We respect any request like this from you, your partner or birth team during your birth story. We will quietly step out of the room during the labor and/or post-birth til you would like us to come back in.

  • Typically your partner, main support person, or family member attending to you during your birth will be the designated person to contact us. If you are working with a doula or midwife, they can also be the person responsible for the updates and communication.

If you go into labor early, we will do everything in our power to be there. We have a 3rd photographer as our backup as well, so we are as prepared as we can be. Please communicate with us early and often—that gives us the ability to plan and arrive on time.

  • We will travel within Ventura County - Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Camarillo, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Port Hueneme as well as areas in Santa Barbara and Ojai. Scheduled c-sections can be booked for further outlying areas. Please inquire about your location if not listed.

  • The number of photos depends on how long we were at your birth. Generally, it can be between 250-450 photographs.

Our business is built on photographs. It is how you found us and how others will find us in the future. We do share photos from birth stories on social media in order to market services; however, we are always mindful of their sensitive and personal nature. We are always considerate and respectful of our clients and will never post graphic photographs without your consent.

  • Payments can be made via credit/debit or cash. If paying via the online invoice, you have the option to pay in full or make a monthly payment arrangement.

  • We understand birth photography is an investment. A lot of work and time goes into being birth photographers; we put our vacations on hold and miss kids sports tournaments to be on call 24/7 for 4 weeks as well as spending the 5-10 hours during your birth and 15+ hours culling and editing after the birth. To help offset your costs and get the story package your heart desires, you can set up a payment plan or take advantage of doing a birth registry to which your friends and family can contribute.
